The Center for Environmental Studies (CEA) of Vitoria-Gasteiz has presented its agenda of activities for the summer of 2025, with a total of 61 proposals that will take place from June to September, both at the Interpretation Center of the Salburua Wetlands, Ataria, and at the Botanical Garden of Olárizu.
In a statement, the Councilor for the Environment, Borja Rodríguez, has indicated that, «after the spring explosion of leaves and flowers, it is time to observe how many species bear fruit and discover the evolution of the garden in the warmest months, and look for traces of the mammals with which we share territory.»
August will bring the ‘Cinema in the Garden Cycle’, which will celebrate its sixth edition in the courtyard of the Casa de la Dehesa, with a careful selection of outdoor movies. In September, nocturnal butterflies and migratory birds will be protagonists, as many of them find in the garden’s forests a place to rest before continuing their long journey.
One of the key events will be the conference by researcher Ana Calviño, which will take place on September 24. Under the title ‘Green for whom? Thinking about urban flora for the restoration of ecological interactions’, she will reflect on the need to design green infrastructures that restore ecological links between plants, pollinating insects, and birds, advocating for native species and resilient landscapes.
This proposal will be complemented by various practical workshops, where the public can learn to make santolina oil, homemade vinegars, or recycled paper, and two family proposals with a botanical flavor: an exploration of Central European forests and the second edition of the ‘Vegetal Olympiad’.
ATARIA
This program will be complemented by the one designed by the CEA for the Interpretation Center of the Salburua Wetlands. «At Ataria, we will deploy a summer program that will combine scientific outreach, creativity, and live nature, turning the Salburua Wetland into a dynamic space for learning and enjoyment,» stated Rodríguez.
The public can participate in various workshops. From making cases with recycled materials to making artisan nibs or practical sessions on astronomy, in addition to ‘PolinizArte’, a workshop that combines artistic creation and ecological awareness.
One of the most special events of the summer will be the audiovisual show ‘Miradas Inversas’, an interdisciplinary scenic proposal that invites to observe the natural environment from different angles. The creation, signed by Edurne Maiona, Sara Luna Torrego, Elida Díez, and Matxalen Erzilla, will combine dance, image, and reflection to offer a deep and committed sensory experience.
Naturalistic tours will allow you to discover Salburua from the inside, with bird watching outings, the popular ‘Bioadventures’, and special proposals to observe the awaited rutting of the deer at the end of September. In addition, Ataria’s program extends beyond the wetland, with routes to natural spaces of great value such as Izki, Aizkorri-Aratz, or the Montes de Vitoria.
The talks will address diverse topics such as the history of Alava’s botany, food and health, astronomy, or biodiversity, always led by disseminators, scientists, and specialized groups.
The children and family audience will once again have a central place in the agenda, with proposals such as ‘Eguzkia, Lurra eta Ilargia’, a workshop to discover the movements of the sun, Earth, and moon from a scientific and amazing perspective, or ‘Exploring the world of birds’, an experience of free play, art, and observation inspired by the life of birds. Activities designed to learn by exploring and strengthen the bond with nature from childhood.
Two temporary exhibitions complete the summer offering. From June 28 to August 24, ‘The birds of paradise’ brings together a series of engravings created by students of the Calcographic Engraving Workshop of the School of Arts and Crafts, inspired by the work of Audubon and the illustrated tradition of the ornithological world.
From September 2, ‘Climate Emergency. An inevitable social challenge’, by photographer Lucas Vallecillos, will document the effects of climate change in our environment, with guided tours and screenings commented by the author.
The complete agenda can be consulted on the municipal website, and registrations can be made from Wednesday, June 26 at Ataria, civic centers, phone 010, and the municipal website.
