La recogida de fracción orgánica en Vitoria-Gasteiz aumenta un 11%

The City Council approves the purchase of more compostable bags to continue their distribution over the next two years

The collection of organic fraction residues deposited in the pneumatic mailboxes and brown containers of Vitoria-Gasteiz has increased by 11% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year.

At a press conference, the mayor, Maider Etxebarria, emphasized «data that demonstrates the involvement of the residents of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the path that will lead us to meet the targets set by the European Union.»

As specified, between January and March, 856 tons of organic waste have been deposited in the pneumatic mailboxes and brown containers, which are opened with the Municipal Citizen Card or the ‘Ireki’ application. The monthly average at the beginning of this year reaches 285 tons.

Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the total organic fraction has increased by 11%, «motivated by the start of the free distribution campaign of compostable bags, which was launched in September of last year.»

On the other hand, in the first three months of the previous year, when the distribution operation was not yet underway, the total organic fraction collected was 762 tons, placing the monthly average at 254 tons.

Etxebarria highlighted that the campaign to distribute bags for domestic recycling with a capacity of 10 liters also improves the total tonnage and monthly average by 5%, when comparing the period between January and March of the current year with the last three months of the previous year.

«The 856 tons collected in this year’s quarter are higher than the 816 collected in the final stretch of last year when the system of free distribution of compostable bags was already in place,» she added.

COMPOSTABLE BAGS

To continue with the bag distribution system, the municipal government has started the process for a new bulk purchase. Over the next two years, a total of €170,610 will be allocated for the acquisition of bags with capacities of 10 and 50 liters.

«We have launched a tender that will allow us to have a supplier to whom the City Council will place the necessary orders until that budget is exhausted between the years 2025 and 2027,» explained the mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

With this budget, it could be possible to distribute a quantity close to 5 million bags over the next two years. The tender is underway, following approval this Friday, and by November, they could be available in community centers for distribution.

The initiative to distribute compostable bags was launched last September, and since then, more than 2 million bags with a capacity of 10 liters have been distributed to deposit household waste in brown containers and pneumatic mailboxes.
